Eastbound Vail Pass to close Tuesday for vehicle recovery
Eastbound I-70 will be closed near Vail Tuesday, Jan. 14, starting at 9 a.m. for at least six hours to clean up a crash and diesel fuel leaking from a diesel tank required hazmat cleanup.
During the closure, traffic will detour at I-70 at East Vail/Exit 180, and travel east on US 24 to Leadville, then take Colorado Highway 91 north to rejoin eastbound I-70 at Copper Mountain. Motorists should be prepared to add an additional 90 minutes to their travel time.
On Wednesday, Jan. 8, around 8 p.m. emergency services responded to a crash of a commercial motor vehicle traveling westbound east of Vail that crossed the median and collided with another commercial vehicle and passenger vehicles traveling eastbound, according to CDOT. The hazmat operations prevented the vehicle recovery that day.
Tow trucks will take at least six hours for the operation. CDOT officials picked a relatively slow traffic time, according to a news release.
Travelers are urged to “know before you go.” Gather information about weather forecasts and anticipated travel impacts and current road conditions prior to hitting the road. CDOT resources include:
