Snowy and dangerous conditions shut down U.S. Highway 6 over Loveland Pass Friday night. Heavy snow is moving through the mountains and could drop up to 10 inches at Loveland, according to the National Weather Service.
Traffic cameras operated by the Colorado Department of Transportation show a messy, snow-covered roadway, and the transportation agency says the road is “icy and snow-packed.”
A passenger vehicle traction law is in effect for I-70, meaning vehicles must have mud or snow tires, use chains or alternative traction devices or be a four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle, according to CDOT.
Traffic on Interstate 70 is moving, though slowly due to icy spots on the highway and the usual Friday ski area traffic.
Steady snow is expected to fall in the northern and central mountains, increasing Saturday.
One model forecasts up to 13.5 inches in Steamboat Springs and 5.5 inches in Edwards. Colorado Springs may see 2 inches while Trinidad could see up to 5.3 inches.
Other models show a slightly more pessimistic outlook (for snow lovers), with total snowfall values lower across the board.
