Colorado Springs woman to become first double amputee on ‘Naked and Afraid’

Colorado Springs’ Mandy Horvath will make history on season 18 of “Naked and Afraid” as the show’s first double amputee.

Horvath, who lost her legs about a decade ago in an accident, will try to survive alongside partner Jonny in the dense rainforest of Belize. There, the pair will attempt to spend 21 days in the remote jungle, battling “heavy rains, swarms of mosquitoes and toxic plants,” according to a news release from Warner Bros.

For Horvath, this is just another challenge to showcase her strength. The local resident became the first female bilateral amputee to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. Horvath is also recognized for her feats around the Pikes Peak region, including summiting America’s Mountain and completing the Manitou Incline.

Shortly after completing those challenges, Horvath went viral again — this time for her mug shot, when she was arrested under suspicion of driving under the influence. With her third drunken driving arrest in 2018, Horvath committed to sobriety, telling The Gazette she had struggled with depression.

Since starting her sobriety journey, she has continued to ring in new successes, including hiking the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in 2021. And now, she’ll share her persistent spirit on-screen.

The episode airs at 6 p.m. March 9 on Discovery Channel.
