Family disputes Douglas County Sheriff’s account of Highlands Ranch arcade shooting

The family of an armed man fatally shot by a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office deputy at a Highlands Ranch entertainment venue is challenging the Sheriff’s Office’s version of events.

On Sunday, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office identified Jalin Seabron, 23, as the person who was shot and killed by a deputy after allegedly refusing orders to drop his weapon in the parking lot of the Highlands Ranch Main Event on Saturday, Feb. 8.

Deputies were originally called to the location around 11:51 p.m. for a separate shooting inside the entertainment venue. Nevaeha Crowley-Sanders, 23, is accused of shooting a woman four times and firing additional rounds inside the building.

Meanwhile, outside the venue, deputies encountered Seabron. The Sheriff’s Office said he pointed a handgun with an illegal extended magazine “towards several people,” then turned to a deputy before he was shot.

Authorities on Sunday named Seabron an accomplice to the alleged female shooter. The former’s family’s denied the allegations and demanded the release of the deputy’s body cam footage.

In a news release Monday, civil rights attorneys from Tyrone Glover Attorneys For Justice, representing the Seabron family, argued the deputy’s decision to open fire was unjustified.

Attorneys said the Sheriff’s Office has been offering the public an “inconsistent narrative.”

“The Sheriff’s Office is deliberately conflating two separate incidents and attempting to retroactively justify the shooting of an innocent man,” the attorneys said.

Civil rights attorneys said the family has seen the body cam footage, which the Sheriff’s Office has said it can’t release publicly because of a request to a judge by the defense attorneys of Crowley-Sanders.

“From what they were shown,” attorneys representing Seabron’s family said, “there is not sufficient evidence that Mr. Seabron pointed a weapon at anyone, turned to face officers, nor disobeyed orders before being fatally shot.”

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office officials said Sunday they want to release the body cam recording to maintain transparency, and that’s usually the department policy’s with officer-involved shootings. Sheriff’s Office officials, including Sheriff Darren Weekly, said the office supports the actions of its deputy, who has been placed on paid administrative leave as per protocol.

“The video shows the first deputy on scene acted to protect himself and others from grave and immediate danger,”  officials previously in a news release.

Family attorneys said the Sheriff’s Office’s response is a way to “justify the deputy’s actions after the fact.”

In addition to the release of body cam footage, the Seabron family is demanding a separate, independent investigation “to ensure justice for Jalin,” according to the attorneys.

Seabron, 23, “leaves behind a grieving mother and a pregnant girlfriend carrying his unborn child,” the news release said.

Days after the Main Event shooting, members of the Seabron family launched a GoFundMe page to raise funeral funds.

On Tuesday, a family member updated the page requesting additional help due to “unforeseen funeral and burial costs.”

With a goal of raising nearly $13,000, Seabron’s GoFundMe, as of Wednesday, has raised more than $9,200 in nine days.
