Mellow Mushroom shutters Denver 16th Street Mall location

Say good bye to the Mellow Mushroom, Colorado.

The Atlanta-based pizza chain shuttered its last Colorado location this week. The restaurant, at 16th and Lawrence streets on Denver’s 16th Street Mall, had a sign posted on the door Thursday announcing its closure.

“This location is closed,” the sign read. “Thank you for your support, and we look forward to serving you at another Mellow Mushroom location soon.”

The closest locations to Denver now, however, are located in Nebraska or Arizona, according to the Mellow Mushroom website.

Last week, the pizza restaurant had a sign that indicated the closure was only temporary, “in observance of meetings,” but this week the sign on the façade of the building had been removed.

Mellow Mushroom was founded in 1974 in Atlanta and has about 170 locations across the country.

It expanded in 2009 to Colorado with plans to open 15 locations, according to Westword. However, it never expanded beyond its restaurants in Centennial, Lone Tree and the 16th Street Mall.

Mellow Mushroom is the latest restaurant to shutter along the 16th Street Mall, which has been severely hampered by construction over the past few years. The mall plans to reopen later this spring and has a new $1.5 million budget for “activation activities related to the reopening.”
