Multiple crashes along I-70, interstate closed near Georgetown
The Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office has closed westbound Interstate 70 after multiple crashes due to whiteout conditions near the tunnels.
A multi-vehicle crash occurred on I-70 West at mile marker 216, just east of the Eisenhower Tunnel, around 3 p.m. Tuesday, according to a social media post by the sheriff’s office. Three other crashes then occurred in the same area directly after, leading to at least four overall on the highway.
Road camera images shared by the sheriff’s office showed whiteout conditions in the region as snow and high winds pummeled the area.
Westbound I-70 was then closed at mile marker 228 in Georgetown due to “poor visibility, dangerous road conditions and multiple accidents,” the sheriff’s office said.
The amount of those injured during the crashes has yet to be determined, the sheriff’s office said.
Many Colorado roadways were dry Tuesday morning, but strong winds were present. In eastern Colorado, the snow combined with those powerful winds created hazardous conditions, which prompted the Colorado Department of Transportation to close roads.
Colorado Highways 86 and 24 in eastern Colorado were closed for a time Tuesday morning but were back open by the afternoon.
Most roadways east of Denver were reported to have snow and strong winds, CDOT said.
