Ponderosa High School in Parker evacuates briefly due to ‘suspicious device’

A student was detained at a Douglas County high school on Tuesday after a suspicious device was found in their backpack, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Ponderosa High School, 7007 Bayou Gulch Road, off Highway 83/Parker Road in Parker, was ordered evacuated  Tuesday morning as the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office investigated a “suspicious device” found inside the school.

At around 9:28 a.m., a School Resource Officer received information a student “had possibly brought a device to school, in a backpack,” Sheriff’s Office officials said in a new release Tuesday afternoon.

“They did discover a suspicious device inside the backpack,” officials said, without further clarifying what the device was.

On Wednesday, a Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson confirmed with The Denver Gazette the device was explosive in nature.

The entire school was evacuated as precaution and no additional devices were found, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The building and grounds were searched by a bomb-sniffing dog and deputies.

By 11:40 a.m., students were given an “all clear” and sent back to class.

The incident at Ponderosa High School has been turned over to Douglas County Sheriff’s detectives, who will determine any charges to the student or those involved.

Please know that safety is always a top priority at Ponderosa,” Ponderosa High School Principal Ryan Hollingshead said in an email to the community Tuesday.

“As always, our students and parents are encouraged to reach out to a staff member or law enforcement if they have a safety concern,” he said. “Our entire staff is committed to maintaining a happy, healthy and safe learning community for everyone.”

Ponderosa’s evacuation marked the second straight day a major metro Denver area high school evacuated for a perceived threat.

On Monday morning, Golden High School was evacuated because of a student possessing a prop gun. Though no threat materialized, students were given the rest of Monday off.

There are no reported injuries from either incident.
