A mobile home exploded in Boulder County Monday evening, leading to a total loss of the residence.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, along with Mountain View Fire Rescue and the Multi-Agency Fire Investigation Team, responded to a reported structure fire at the San Souci Mobile Home community in the 1500 block of South Foothills Highway around 10:30 p.m. Monday, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.
When responders arrived, they saw light smoke from the home and structural damage, Mountain View Fire Rescue said. The fire was already out, but the walls and roof of the home were damaged.
The explosion and fire are thought to have been caused by a recently installed gas stove, according to the sheriff’s office. The home was deemed a total loss.
The owner escaped from the home told the fire department that a stove had been installed that day and he smelled gas while using it that night.
“At some point later an electrical short in a wall ignited the collecting gas and caused the small explosion,” the fire department said.
The Multi-Agency Fire Investigation Team has opened an investigation on the fire to determine the exact cause.
“Mountain View Fire Rescue always recommends that if someone smells gas in their home to evacuate and leave doors open as you go, then when you’re in a safe area call 911,” Rick Tillery, a spokesperson for the fire department, told The Denver Gazette.
