Father who drowned helping children at Lake Pueblo identified as Colorado Springs man

The 53-year-old man who died in an apparent drowning at Lake Pueblo on May 14 has been identified.

The Pueblo County coroner’s office says the man is Manuel DeJesus Villanueva Miranda of Colorado Springs.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife reports that Miranda went out into the water to help children swimming in rough waters. Surrounding park visitors saw him go under the water. Visitors then went into the water to pull him out.

Rangers at Lake Pueblo State Park report receiving the call for help and about 2:45 p.m. that day.

Visitors, park staff and medical personnel assisted with CPR on Miranda for approximately 40 minutes, according to a statement put out by CPW.

Miranda was not wearing a personal flotation device at the time of the accident, and the water temperature was in the upper 50s with heavy wind.

Two of the children Miranda had attempted to aid were his own children. Two more were friends. All of the children are reported to be safe.
