Arsonist who burned Colorado Supreme Court courthouse pleads guilty

The Arizona man who broke into the Colorado Supreme Court building last year pleaded guilty to a felony arson charge on Friday, according to the Denver District Attorney.

Brandon Olsen, 46, shot his way into the courthouse early Jan. 2, 2024.

He then held a security guard at gunpoint, took his keys, then went up to the seventh floor and started a fire.

As part of the plea agreement, District Attorney John Walsh dropped four other charges: robbery; weapon prohibited; first-degree arson and felony criminal mischief. He’ll spend up to 14 years in prison. He also agreed to pay restitution.

The damage to the building had been in the millions of dollars.

“This plea ensures that Mr. Olsen will be held accountable and serve a considerable prison sentence for the damage that he caused,” Walsh said in a statement.

Here’s how the high-profile arson went down, according to the probable cause affidavit.

About 3:40 a.m. that morning, police got a call about an incident at the courthouse located at 1300 Broadway.

Reports said the suspect had just crashed a car at 13th Avenue and Lincoln Street and then ran “with a pistol in his hand” into the courthouse.

Police surrounded the building.

While on the perimeter, the suspect fired additional shouts out of the building.

The building’s fire-suppressing sprinkler system quickly doused the flame. It also caused millions worth of damage and it took as months before employees were able to return to work in the building, Walsh said.

Olsen told investigators he drove to Denver from Arizona to be with his son for New Year’s celebrations. He admitted to ingesting Fentanyl pills and smoking methamphetamines.

Olsen even called 911 and reported being the one in the building.

He is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 12.
