Colorado State Patrol to begin targeted DUI enforcement Wednesday
Colorado State Patrol and 51 local law enforcement agencies will begin a period of targeted DUI enforcement on Wednesday.
The six-day period — Wednesday through Monday — will include additional saturation patrols, sobriety checkpoints and on-duty law enforcement, the Colorado Department of Transportation said in a news release.
“Since 2019, 31 people have been killed in crashes involving impaired drivers during the Independence Day holiday period,” said CDOT’s Office of Transportation Safety Director Darrell Lingk in the release. “Prioritize safety this Fourth of July weekend and put down the keys if you’ve been drinking.”
July had the highest number of impaired driving-related fatalities of any month in 2024, and has been in the top three highest months involving impaired traffic crashes since 2019, the release says. So far this year, there have been 82 impaired driving deaths, a 15% decrease from this same period in 2024.
To help limited impaired-related crashes this weekend, the The Wilhite Law Firm will offer rideshare reimbursement credits as part of its Holiday Rideshare Program, according to the release. The Rideshare Program will cover a total of $20 for a one-way ride Thursday through Sunday.
The targeted enforcement period takes place during the busiest and most dangerous period of the year for traffic travel, according to CDOT. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, an average of one in three driving fatalities involved an impaired driver.
