Historic bath house now a poolside hotel at Colorado hot springs resort
One of Colorado’s most historic hot springs destinations has unveiled a boutique hotel where the present meets the past.
From Glenwood Hot Springs Resort’s billing, Hotel 1888 is a picture of modern “European-style elegance” and “also rich in tradition.”
The billing continues: “When guests stay in one of Hotel 1888’s 16 luxury guest rooms, including two high-end suites, they immediately have a glimpse of the rich history of this iconic Colorado attraction.”

Opened earlier this summer beside the world’s largest hot springs-fed pool, the hotel’s name honors the resort’s opening year.
Hotel 1888 is located in what was originally the Stone Bath House. Designed by Austrian architect Theodore von Rosenberg and built with sandstone from a quarry near Basalt, the structure originally featured 42 sunken Roman baths, a men’s-only casino, a women’s parlor and a physician’s office, according to history maintained by Glenwood Hot Springs Resort.

The history adds: “Guests enjoyed the luxury of electric lighting, private call bells that rang bath house attendants and hot and cold running water inside the building.”
Along with the Grand Pool just steps away, the Stone Bath House helped put the western Colorado town on the map, the history explains: “As word spread about the new resort, aristocrats, political leaders, movie stars and spiritual believers ventured to Glenwood Springs from around the globe.”

Who might venture to Hotel 1888 now? At last check, limited availability in August ranged between $500 and $900 a night. (Overnights also come with breakfast from 1888 Bistro, along with full access to the soaking pools and to the Athletic Club, which has been housed in the Stone Bath House.)
Loretta Ayala, the resort’s hotel manager, called it “ideal for relaxing getaways for couples and friends, wedding groups, executive and board retreats, and incentive trips.”

Most spacious is the Silver Kings Suite, with a private balcony overlooking the pool. Meanwhile, the 1888 Suite overlooks downtown and features an original fireplace. Across the 16 rooms, the resort highlights “a rich blue paint color, luxurious linens, tasteful patterned wallpaper, high ceilings, large windows and modern, upscale bathrooms.”
Hotel 1888 is the latest in a recent series of major investments at Glenwood Hot Springs Resort.
Along with renovations at the larger lodge, the resort last summer expanded with the Yampah Mineral Baths, with five hot and cold pools offering a more intimate soaking experience.
