The Historic Elitch Theatre has been broken into several times recently, and the theater and police are asking for help finding information about the break-ins.
According to a Facebook post from the theatre, it has experienced break-ins recently. The post also includes video footage of suspects walking around the theater with flashlights. The footage is marked July 13.
“If you recognize these kids, please report them – they need to understand the seriousness of their crime!” the Facebook post reads. “The police are called and, on this occasion, they showed up just minutes after the kids left.”
Founded in 1890, the Historic Elitch Theatre is known as Denver’s oldest cultural venue. Located at the original site of Elitch Gardens in northwest Denver, the theatre consisted of little more than a 12-sided tent and rows of chairs. However, it soon became one of the first summer stock theaters in the nation and the first venue to show motion pictures in Colorado. After years of performances, the theater closed in 1987. The new Elitch Gardens opened at the downtown location.
The Historic Elitch Gardens Theatre Foundation was formed in the early 2000s and worked on the restoration of the theater. It reopened in 2023 for its first full production in decades.
The theater will be hosting history this Friday, where guests can “learn about Denver’s oldest cultural venue and the important role it played in creating this beautiful state that we all enjoy today.”
