Michael Porter Jr. offers appreciation for time with Nuggets, excitement for next chapter with Nets

There are no hard feelings from Michael Porter Jr. after the initial shock of his trade to Brooklyn wore off.

Porter was on a plane to Saint-Tropez with friends and family for a European vacation before getting back to work. As soon as he connected to the in-flight wireless internet, he received urgent texts from his agent, Mark Bartelstein, and a member of the Nuggets front office. He wasn’t able to hop on a call but realized his office had changed locations.

“I immediately knew what was up,” Porter said from Capri, Italy, in a video posted to YouTube Wednesday afternoon. “I immediately knew what was going on.”

There was some shock initially. A couple of days earlier, Porter said he was staying at the Four Seasons private residences in downtown Denver. He ran into Jon Wallace, who had recently been named the Nuggets’ new executive vice president of player personnel, though Porter said he was unaware of the promotion, as he’s given up social media.

“We sat down. We talked for a while. He started telling me how we’re going to build the team, who he wants to get, who he wants to surround us with,” Porter said, adding Wallace pitched him on the idea of playing with a reserve point guard who would feed him the ball when Porter plays with the bench.

“All this stuff is getting me really excited, but I also think he heard in my voice that I kind of wanted to grow my game. I didn’t want to plateau. I want to keep getting better throughout my career. I think he also heard that.”

The first six minutes of Porter’s nearly 12-minute video were filled with gratitude and appreciation. It started with Tim Connelly, the man who drafted him with the 14th pick of the 2018 draft, and continued to Stan and Josh Kroenke.

“They took a chance on me that day,” Porter said.

“My life was forever changed.”

Denver’s medical staff and trainers were second on the list.

“You guys were tremendous is getting me back into a place where I was able to play the game I love,” Porter continued. “I just want to say thank you for that.”

Then, it was on to the equipment managers, ball boys and team chef. Sparky Gonzales, the recently retired equipment manager who spent 47 seasons with the Nuggets, got a special shoutout.

For all the roster turnover over Porter’s seven years in Denver, Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic were the two constants. They were next on the list.

“I appreciate you guys, accepting me, coming into the team. You guys already had your two-man game going on, your very potent two-man game. When I came there, you guys immediately made me feel comfortable with my game,” Porter said. “You guys put me a position to succeed.”

Denver Nuggets drawn into difficult group in NBA Cup

The relationship with Michael Malone, Porter’s first NBA coach, featured its fair share of rocky moments, but it didn’t take long for things to smooth out after Malone was fired and Porter was traded.

“Thank you, man, just for helping me grow up and teaching me how to play the game the right way,” Porter said.

The second half of the video looked onward. The Nets are in the middle of a significant rebuild and have one of the league’s lower projected win totals. That should provide Porter an opportunity to explore his game.

“I’m really excited for this next chapter out here in Brooklyn. Over there in Denver, I feel like my ceiling had kind of plateaued,” he said. “We just have a way of playing, and how Joker plays, how Jamal plays, that two-man game is very potent. That’s how we play. I’m so appreciative of the way we played. We end up winning a championship, but I do feel like my ceiling in Denver kind of plateaued a little bit. I’m excited for this next chapter in Brooklyn, for sure.”

Porter’s also happy for the player headed to Denver. He said he and Cam Johnson are close enough friends where they might considered exchanging residences in their new homes.

“He might stay in my crib in Denver. I might stay where he lived in Brooklyn,” Porter said. “

“Denver got a great player and a great dude. I’m excited for him to finally compete for a championship over there. I, myself, am excited to expand my game and be able to do what I do.”

The only regret seemed to be how things ended. Porter hurt his left shoulder diving for a loose ball during Denver’s first-round series against the Clippers. He continued to play throughout Denver’s second-round series against the Thunder that went to seven games, but his production was limited in his last games as a Nugget.

“That hurts that’s how my journey with the Nuggets ended, but everything happens for a reason. If you know me, you know I’m a man of faith,” Porter said.

“I’m very excited, and I’m ready to get this next chapter of my life rolling.”
