Skiers and riders now have an answer to the looming question: Who was to buy Eldora Mountain Resort outside Nederland, Colorado?

The town of Nederland is buying the famed ski area, that’s who.

Announced Tuesday, the town of Nederland signed a letter of intent to buy Eldora Mountain Resort from current owner POWDR.

“Talks began last fall, accelerated after January 10, 2025, when the Town signed a confidentiality agreement, and reached the signed term sheet on July 8, 2025,” the town said on its website about the letter of intent. “If all goes smoothly, we could finalize the purchase by the beginning of October 2025.”

The price for the 680-acre ski area roughly five miles west of Nederland was not disclosed in the statement, however, town officials in 2024 estimated they would need between $100 and $200 million to acquire the ski area.

According to town officials, it will issue municipal revenue bonds backed only by the resort’s earnings — which are profitable enough to service the debt.

Town officials said the revenue bonds will not be backed by local tax dollars, avoiding risk to the taxpayers, and that the Town will also be exploring opportunities for grants and private-sector dollars to help lower the total debt.

“In the coming weeks, the Board of Trustees will consider for approval of a “Bond Resolution” that will approve a not-to-exceed ceiling amount so residents will know the maximum debt the Town can assume, even if the final purchase price is lower,” the Town said.

Town officials said the exact price will remain confidential, however, the Board of Trustees must approve a not-to-exceed bond amount that covers the acquisition, and the consultants and advisors needed to close the deal.

The deal between the town of Nederland and POWDR could close as soon as October, according to town officials.

POWDR will continue to support the mountain for the first two winters and summers.

“The POWDR team will continue to support Eldora under a two-year agreement, the Town will partner with 303 Ski, a coalition of Front Range ski-industry veterans, who have been instrumental in vetting operating plans, conducting financial modeling, and assessing community programming,” town officials said. “303 Ski will plan to support the mountain once POWDR’s contract expires.”

The Town will also create a new employment position titled “Deputy Town Manager, Executive Director of Mountain Operations” to interface between the Mountain and the Town Government.

According to town officials, during POWDR’s support of the mountain during the transition, all current Eldora employees will become Town employees, adding about 700 people to the municipal staff.

The town of Nederland hopes to annex the mountain, giving it more control as it develops it into a multi-season resort with summer operations and even night skiing once again.

Eldora will remain part of the Ikon Pass according to POWDR.

More information will be available at a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m., Thursday at the Nederland Community Center, with the town hall meeting being livestreamed.

“The lifts will still run the same as now, the trails will still be shaped by the same hands,” the Board of Trustees penned in the statement. “What changes is the support around them. What grows is a shared future between the people of Eldora and the people of Nederland, who have always been part of the same story.”
