RJ Harvey shines with big run, still learning pass protection | Broncos training camp Day 4
ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Tuesday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.
Play of the day
RJ Harvey showcased his elite agility with a big run in 11-on-11 play. The second-round running back changed direction, left to right, with a jump cut to break away from defenders. Coach Sean Payton said after practice: “He had a run today that was something. We kind of turned and looked at each other.”
The flip side? Harvey got blown up in pass protection on the very next play. There’s still plenty to learn. But Harvey has flashed potential that makes him an intriguing X-Factor for the offense moving forward.
Position battle
No. 2 quarterback: Jarrett Stidham, the returning backup quarterback, is under contract through 2026. But newcomer Sam Ehlinger has made impressive plays on a daily basis in training camp. On Tuesday, Ehlinger threw a deep ball on the run to wide receiver Devaughn Vele, who elevated in traffic to make the tough catch. Could Ehlinger step into Stidham’s spot as Bo Nix’s backup — now or later?

Stock rising
WR Courtland Sutton: The veteran wide receiver was all smiles when speaking with reporters after signing a four-year, $92-million contract extension on Monday. He also made several nice catches throughout the course of practice. Sutton is a team leader and key weapon for Nix.
Stock falling
Big-play offense: Good luck gaining chunk yardage against this defense. They were clear winners of the practice with few breakdowns exploited by the offense. The pendulum will swing throughout training camp with the offense sometimes coming out on top. But defense reigned supreme on the second day of full pads at Broncos Park.

Right tackle Mike McGlinchey increased his team practice reps after mostly watching the last few practices. Wide receiver A.T. Perry viewed practice while on the physically unable to perform list (PUP).
