Thornton police arrest two in connection with shooting

Thornton Police Department officers arrested two suspects in connection with a July 22 shooting that injured one person.

Police arrested an 18-year-old and a 16-year-old male following the shooting which occurred around 6:30 p.m. at an apartment complex near the 11800 block of York Street, according to a news release.

Officials did not identify the 18-year-old suspect.

Officers in the area said they heard multiple gunshots. When they arrived at the scene officers observed the 18-year-old man armed with a handgun.

After officers gave verbal commands, the man attempted to flee. Police followed and deployed a taser, taking him into custody.

Two additional individuals believed to be involved were also detained at the scene, according to TPD.

During their investigation, police identified the 16-year-old male as a shooting suspect.

A short time later, officers said they were notified about a walk-in gunshot victim at a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The 18-year-old suspect was arrested for aggravated assault and illegal discharge of a firearm. He has since been released pending further investigation, according to police.

The 16-year-old suspect was arrested for aggravated assault, illegal discharge of a firearm, and possession of a handgun by a juvenile. He has been booked into the Juvenile Detention Center.

TPD said the incident appears to be isolated, involving individuals known to one another.

There is no threat to the public, according to police.

“We understand that incidents like this are unsettling for our community,” said Thornton Police Chief Jim Baird in the release. “Our officers responded swiftly to a dangerous situation, and we’re grateful no bystanders were injured. We remain committed to a thorough investigation and to holding those involved accountable, and we thank the residents and witnesses who stepped forward to provide information.”

The investigation remains active and ongoing.

TPD encouraged anyone with information about this to contact the department’s tip line at 720-977-5069.
