Two men died while flying a recently bought float plane home after taking off from the Montrose Regional Airport in Colorado.

According to reporting from CBS News, the two men died when the plane crashed on June 23, less than a mile from the airport.

The two passengers were Alejandro D. Antunez, 53, and Lawrence Skinner, 61. They were both from Fort Myers, Florida. CBS News reports that the Montrose County Coroner’s Office is looking into the cause of death.

A preliminary report the from National Transportation Safety Board described the pilot as properly rated for single-engine land and sea flights, a including commercial pilot privileges for single-engine sea planes and the co-pilot as employed as a commercial airline pilot, held ratings and flight instructor certification for the Boeing 757, the Boeing 767, and the Douglas DC-8, and was a certified airplane mechanic.

The report from the NTSB stated that a witness on the ramp at the airport observed the plane departing with a nose-up attitude, indicating that it appeared to be losing altitude without climbing. Another witness, in a residential area near the accident area, saw the plane lose altitude and “impacted into bluffs behind a house.” The aircraft struck an elevated dirt driveway, coming to a stop behind a home.

NTSB investigators recovered wreckage from the accident site, which was taken to be further examined.

According to CBS News, a final report usually takes several months to make.
