Wildfire begins in Jefferson County
Jefferson County firefighters began battling a wildfire just south of Conifer Tuesday afternoon.
The White Hawk fire began burning late Tuesday afternoon on a mountainside near White Hawk Trail — around half a mile north of the North Fork of the South Platte River near Conifer — according to a 3:30 p.m. social media post by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
The fire is burning in a remote area and is around two acres in size. It’s creeping through ponderosa, juniper and oak brush, the Elk Creek Fire Department, the lead agency in the fight, said.
There have been no evacuations issued as of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Elk Creek Fire and Conifer Fire began responding to the fire, calling in helicopter support from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office around 3:30 p.m.
“Erratic winds have calmed at the moment giving firefighters an opportunity for better suppression efforts,” the sheriff’s office said around 4:30 p.m.
