CB Ja’Quan McMillian intercepts QB Bo Nix to end practice | Broncos training camp Day 12

ENGLEWOOD — A behind-the-scenes look at Broncos training camp practice Tuesday with observations and analysis from The Denver Gazette.

Play of the day

Cornerback Ja’Quan McMillian intercepted quarterback Bo Nix during an 11-on-11 period to end practice. It was part of a two-minute drill with Nix rolling right to make the throw. McMillian made a leaping grab for an impressive pick intended for wide receiver Michael Bandy. McMillian is having a strong training camp despite competition at nickel back from rookie Jahdae Barron.

Position battle

Tight end: Evan Engram is clearly the No. 1 tight end for the Broncos’ offense. But filling in roster depth behind him in no easy task. Lucas Krull, Caleb Lohner, Caden Prieskorn and Adam Trautman were all regular passing targets during team periods at practice. Nate Adkins was absent. But only three of those players are likely to join Engram on the active roster.

Stock rising

OLB Jonathon Cooper: The veteran edge rusher caused havoc during multiple 11-on-11 periods, getting into the backfield and pushing Nix out of the pocket. Nik Bonitto might garner most of the headlines surrounding Denver’s talented outside linebackers. But that should only create more opportunity for Cooper to dominate this season. He’s accumulated 19 sacks over the past two years. It seems that more are on the way.

Stock falling

Player sleep: The Broncos team plane did not land in Colorado until about 3 a.m. Sunday after their preseason opener Saturday at the San Francisco 49ers. Players were off Monday. But coach Sean Payton still prioritized rest on Tuesday with a ramp-up practice in shells. The long grind of training camp isn’t made easier with a lack of proper sleep. Players should be well rested on Wednesday when they return to padded practice at Broncos Park.

Dre Greenlaw wore a helmet and participated in individual drills. But he worked on the side field during team periods. Wide receiver A.T. Perry, previously on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, was cleared for individual drills. He also worked on the side field during team periods.

Fullback Michael Burton was a full participant after missing the preseason game at the 49ers.
