Colorado Parks ranger stabbed at Staunton State Park, airlifted to hospital

A seasonal Colorado Parks and Wildlife ranger was airlifted to the hospital after being stabbed at Staunton State Park near Pine on Tuesday morning.

Authorities are looking for the suspect — described as a 6-foot white man in his early 30s, brown hair and clean shaven, wearing a blank grey shirt and blue jeans — who fled on foot from the scene, according to social media posts from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Police first posted about the incident just before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The incident occurred near the park’s Lazy V Trailhead, officials said.

Authorities are conducting an air and ground search for the suspect, they said. Several agencies including Colorado State Patrol, Golden police, Arvada police, Lakeside police and the regional SWAT team are helping respond to the incident.

Officials have closed the park until further notice due to the investigation, they said.

Police could not answer questions about the ranger’s condition, say in what direction the suspect ran or provide details about what led to the incident Tuesday afternoon.
