Evacuations ordered for new wildfire near Carbondale in western Colorado
Garfield County authorities have issued an evacuation order for residents in an area near Carbondale for another wildfire burning in western Colorado.
Dubbed as the “Ranch at Coulter Creek” fire, the blaze grew north of Panorama Drive below the Ranch at Coulter Creek subdivision Sunday afternoon.
The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office issued the evacuation order for residences in the Panorama subdivision and areas east of County Road 100 to Upper Cattle Creek Road, according to the Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District.
Officials urge everyone to avoid the area of County Road 100, County Road 115, County Road 113 and the Missouri Heights area to allow firefighters to work.
Crews on the ground and in the air continue to battle the blaze, which is threatening structures in the area, according to a Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District spokesperson.
As of 3 p.m., the spokesperson said evacuation orders remain in effect as the fire has burned up to 80 acres in an area north of town. There are no reports of any structures damaged.
Although the fire is not contained, “the rate of spread has slowed due to coordinated efforts by ground crews and aerial resources,” officials said in a news release.
Carbondale & Rural Fire Protection District were first called at 11:04 a.m. to a wildland fire in the Missouri Heights area, according to the news release.
“Upon arrival,” officials said, “firefighters found an active fire burning in grass, pinyon, juniper, and sage moving at a fast rate of spread.”
“Crews immediately began suppression efforts from the ground while air resources were deployed to assist,” officials said.
Authorities are directing evacuees to Roaring Fork High School, which is the evacuation center. Anyone moving livestock to safety can call Alpine Equine Hospital at 970-366-1320.
