Multiple police deputies shot in Virginia standoff

Several law enforcement officers were shot in southern Virginia on Wednesday afternoon, a congressman announced.

Rep. John McGuire (R-VA), a freshman representative who beat former Rep. Bob Good in the 2024 primary for his seat, said he’s following the situation closely in Pittsylvania County.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the deputies who were shot in Pittsylvania County, as well as their families. We are closely following the situation and keeping everyone affected in our hearts during this difficult time,” he said.

Pittsylvania County is on Virginia’s southern border with North Carolina. The incident happened in Gretna, a small town located within the county.

Local news station WDBJ reported that three officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries and that warrants were being served at a home when the shooting took place. A SWAT team assisted in evacuating the victims, they reported.

Multiple law enforcement and other agencies are present at the site of the shooting, including the Pittsylvania County Sheriff’s Office, Campbell County Sheriff’s Office, Amherst County Sheriff’s Office, Danville Police Department, Virginia State Troopers, Gretna Fire and Rescue, Hurt Fire Department, and the U.S. Marshals Service.

Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic nominee for governor in the state and a former CIA officer, said she is praying for the deputies involved.

“While we await more information, Adam and I are praying for the members of law enforcement who were shot while responding to an incident in Pittsylvania County. We’re so grateful for our first responders, who run towards danger to keep Virginians safe,” she wrote on social media.
