QB Bo Nix, minute to minute, at Broncos training camp scrimmage

ENGLEWOOD — Experience every move of Bo Nix at Broncos training camp.

The Denver Gazette shadowed the starting quarterback on Saturday before, during, and after the team’s first scrimmage at Broncos Park.

9:15 a.m. The calm before the storm. Players are still in the locker room while the field maintenance crew makes final preparations for practice. They carry buckets of sand and sprinkle it into missing pieces of sod on two grass fields. Members of the equipment crew buzz around on golf carts placing practice mat pads, sleds and other football training items in different spots. The stands on the south end start filling up with fans dressed almost entirely in orange.

9:33 a.m. Nix is among the first players to walk onto the field. Fans who spot his No. 10 jersey from a distance begin yelling — Let’s go, Bo! — as he walks to the center of the field to meet passing game specialist Zack Grossi.

9:35 a.m. Nix begins warmups using two small, weighted balls colored green. He holds one in each hand. Nix walks forward, elbows extended wide, and alternates a slow throwing motion with his forearm at every step. He repeats the process walking backward. Nix changes balls, to a blue color, and continues more weighted mobility exercises. He walks with slow throwing motions. He does lunges and twists, forward and backward.

9:40 a.m. Music blares from the loudspeakers at Broncos Park. Nix picks up a small white towel in his right hand. He carries it like a football. Nix takes quick choppy steps and simulates game-speed throws. The white towel whips back and forth. Grossi later assists the process with a black resistance band. Nix holds the band in his left hand while Grossi pulls on it hard every time Nix simulates a pass.

9:45 a.m. Nix begins playing catch with Grossi, soft-tossing back and forth, with 5 yards in between them. Their distance increases by 5-yard increments with teammates stepping in to catch as the separation grows. Nix eventually throws 50-yard passes to finish his arm warmup.

10 a.m. Individual drills turn into position group drills. Nix takes snaps from Luke Wattenberg, under center and in shotgun, and throws to receivers, tight ends and running backs at a walking pace. Nix simulates handoffs and play-action throws.

10:10 a.m. Nix joins teammates for stretching lines.

10:17 a.m. Nix sprints with offensive linemen and running backs to a five-man blocking sled. The first-team offense huddles. Nix breaks it down and they line up behind the sled. Nix gives a hard count before handing off to running back J.K. Dobbins. Nix repeats the drill after the second-team and third-team offense.

10:20 a.m. Running backs and wide receivers run through a gantlet machine — rubber arms simulating defenders — with Nix and the quarterbacks assisting. Nix tosses a football to teammates just before they enter the gantlet to work on ball security.

10:25 a.m. Nix rejoins position group drills with Wattenberg, running backs, tight ends and wide receivers. They work closer to game speed simulating hand offs, play-action rollouts and downfield throws. Routes get progressively deeper as the drill continues. Nix stops to discuss route details with wide receiver Troy Franklin. The first-team offense continues throwing drills while mixing up different formations, now at a walk-through pace.

10:35 a.m. The horn sounds to mark the beginning of the scrimmage portion of practice. It starts with kickoff drills before 11-on-11 with the line of scrimmage near midfield.
