Safeway is closing a store in Lakewood this weekend, the grocer said.
The store on 9160 W. Colfax Ave. will permanently close on Aug. 9. Safeway, which is owned by parent company Albertsons, decided to shut down the Lakewood store citing underperformance.
“With our focus on growth, we continuously evaluate the performance of our stores and occasionally it’s necessary to close locations that do not meet financial expectations,” a Safeway spokesperson told The Denver Gazette in an email.
The grocer said it would attempt to transfer workers to other Safeway stores around the Denver metro area.
“While closing this location was not an easy decision, we remain committed to growing our business and reinvesting resources into existing Safeway stores across Colorado,” the spokesperson said.

That Lakewood Safeway has been open for decades. The inventory is low, as the store has been selling its inventory at 50-90% off.
Another grocery store is also closing in Centennial soon.
King Soopers will close its store at 5050 E. Arapahoe Rd. next week on Aug. 16.
The closure is part of a wider company decision from Kroger, the Cincinnati-based parent company of King Soopers, which announced it would close about 60 underperforming stores within 18 months across the nation in its last earnings report.
Many Kroger store closures that are typically shut down due to underperforming after annual evaluations were stalled during Albertsons and Kroger’s failed attempt to merge, said Ronald Sargent, Kroger’s interim CEO in the earnings call.
