Trump may invite Zelensky to Alaska summit with Putin: Report

The White House is currently weighing whether to invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the Alaska summit that will see President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin meet face-to-face, according to a report.

Trump announced a summit with Putin that will take place in Alaska next Friday, in a bid to strike an elusive ceasefire deal in the over three-year war in Ukraine. While few other details were given, there was no mention of Zelensky and Trump has previously indicated Putin would not have to meet with the Ukrainian president before their bilateral meeting.

Despite the apparent sidelining, an NBC News report on Saturday suggests Zelensky could “absolutely” be joining them in Alaska, according to one senior U.S. official and three other people briefed on the matter.

“It’s being discussed,” one person revealed.

While discussions are taking place, another person suggested Zelensky and Putin might never be in the same room if he did attend the summit.

That follows Zelensky downplaying the news of the bilateral meeting earlier on Saturday, ultimately rejecting the idea of his country having to cede territory to Russia in a potential peace deal. He also suggested that the war could not end without Ukraine’s input.

TRUMP ANNOUNCES MEETING WITH PUTIN TO TAKE PLACE IN ALASKA

The senior U.S. official briefed on the White House’s discussions said they were “hopeful” that Zelensky would be invited to the summit, an invitation that may not be met favorably by the Kremlin.

Just before the summer, Putin bailed on a round of peace talks in Turkey, despite receiving an invitation from Zelensky. The Kremlin later indicated that the only meeting that could take place between the two leaders was at the signing of a peace deal.
