A tragic vehicular crash took place on Colorado’s iconic Red Mountain Pass on the morning of August 5, involving a Honda Civic traveling off of the roadway and rolling approximately 320 feet down the mountain side.
According to Colorado State Patrol, the crash took place at about 8:06 a.m. near mile marker 88 of Highway 550. This is located a few miles south of Ouray, along a stretch of road between Ouray and Silverton that’s often called the ‘Million Dollar Highway.’ While this road is known for its stunning scenery, traveling it doesn’t come without risk – it consists of winding turns and steep grades, flanked by a massive drop off.

The car involved in the Tuesday morning accident had three people inside, coming to a stop upside-down in a river that runs along the valley floor. Two adults inside of the vehicle were determined to be deceased at the scene, while a female juvenile passenger was rescued by about 11:27 a.m. and transported to a local hospital. Additional details related to the juvenile’s condition were not released.
At the time of the press release on the matter, Highway 550’s southbound lane remained closed with traffic alternating directions in the northbound lane. The southbound lane is expected to remain closed for an extended period of time with no estimate for reopening released.
UPDATE: A more recent 12:49 p.m. update from the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office indicates that Red Mountain Pass between MM 87 and MM 89 will be closed in both directions for an undetermined amount of time due to the accident and vehicle recovery operations.
Colorado State Patrol has requested that anyone who may have witnessed the crash call to speak with investigators at 970-249-4392.
Condolences go out to those impacted by this tragic situation.
