Although Colorado may not be the first place that comes to mind when someone’s thinking about sipping their way across one of America’s ‘wine country,’ the Centennial State has plenty of great places to try locally produced Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, and much more.

Sip your way through Colorado’s wine country on this road trip:

Editor’s Note: Obviously, this wine-themed road trip involves consuming alcohol. Don’t drink and drive. Utilize ride-share services or a designated driver.

Day One: Palisade

Kick off your wine-tasting experience in Palisade. According to Visit Palisade, the area is home to over 30 wineries. The valley’s natural climate is conducive to grape growing. Most of Palisade’s wineries are locally owned and grown. Some great wineries to visit are Restoration Vineyards, Peachfork Orchards & Vineyard, and Bookcliff Vineyards.

Where to eat

Try Fidel’s Cocina & Bar or Peche Restaurant between visiting wineries in Palisade.

Where to stay

Enjoy a stay at the Spoke & Vine Motel or Wine Country Inn (which sits amidst 21 acres of vineyards).

Things to do

Take a hike on the Palisade Rim Trail or go kayaking or paddleboarding on the Colorado River.

Day Two: Montrose

Further south, Montrose is also home to plenty of wineries. La Noue Dubois Winery is a family-run vineyard and winery that focuses on crafting “unique, quality wines.” Wine Horse Wine and Whiskey and Cottonwood Cellars (located nearby in Olathe), are two other great spots to get wine.

Where to eat

Get some steaks at Ted Nelson’s Steakhouse or pizza at Colorado Boy Pizzeria & Brewery.
