Colorado State Patrol investigating fatal Grand County wrong-way crash Monday

Colorado State Patrol officers are investigating a fatal, wrong-way crash that took place just south of Kremmling in northern Colorado Monday morning.

Crews first responded just after 7 a.m., Monday to a fatal, two-vehicle crash on State Highway 9 in Grand County, according to a news release from Colorado State Patrol.

The initial investigation found that a Ford F-150, driven by a 25-year-old man from Parker, was traveling northbound on the highway when it drove into the southbound lane, hitting a GMC Yukon traveling the other direction, police said.

The driver of the Yukon, a 34-year-old man from Kremmling, was pronounced dead on the scene, authorities said. Four other passengers in the Yukon also died; they have yet to be identified.

The driver of the F-150 was airlifted to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said.

No charges have been brought against any of the drivers at this time, authorities said. The highway was closed for over seven hours before reopening just before 3 p.m., Monday.

State patrol has covered 61 wrong-way crashes in 2025, with four of them being fatal incidents, CSP said Tuesday morning. The overall number is down from 70 through this point last year.

Anyone who witnessed the crash and has not spoken to investigators is asked to contact Colorado State Patrol at 970-249-4392, with case reference VC25269.
