A mass rescue took place on Summit County’s Dillon Reservoir in recent days, after a large group of kids and adults got caught in a wind storm.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, 18 juveniles and their adult counselors were kayaking on the lake when strong winds and a storm blew through. The dangerous situation prompted a call for help, with deputies and staff from the Frisco Bay Marina responding.
All children were rescued, along with the counselors. The group was safely transported back to the dock.
Authorities then returned to the lake to retrieve all of the kayaks that had been abandoned.
This situation highlights how changing weather can have a major impact on an outdoor recreation experience in Colorado. In the summer time, water recreation can become particularly hazardous when sudden winds appear, making it difficult to return to shore and potentially tossing those on watercraft into the water. This is one reason why it’s absolutely crucial to wear a life jacket while in or around the water in Colorado.
Thankfully, this story had a happy ending. Always check the forecast before heading out on any adventure – and it can’t be stressed too many times… always wear a life jacket.
