McConnell downplays abortion as election issue
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) on Wednesday downplayed the possible impact of abortion on the midterm elections, arguing voters nationally are chiefly concerned about inflation, crime, and the border.
“That’s clearly where we’re going to be putting the focus,” he said during a press briefing.
The Supreme Court in June struck down its nearly 50-year-old ruling in Roe v. Wade, sending the regulation of abortion back to the states. Democrats have sought to run on protecting abortion access, with some signs it has energized their base.

Asked if he was being “overly dismissive” about the impact the ruling could have on Nov. 8, particularly with suburban women, McConnell said the issue is “playing out in different ways in different states” and that Republican Senate candidates may have different responses to the issue depending on where they’re running.

During the press conference, McConnell reiterated that he thinks it’s “50-50” as to which party takes control of the chamber in the midterm elections.
“It’s going to be really, really close either way,” he said.
