15-year-old charged with murder in connection to Aurora shooting

Editor’s note: the Adams County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as 28-year-old Fernando Alvarez Lopez. The cause of death is still under investigation.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office filed murder charges against a 15-year-old boy in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this month.

The 15-year-old boy, who was not identified due to being a juvenile, was officially charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of attempted first-degree murder, possession of a handgun by a juvenile and two aggravated juvenile offender sentence enhancers on Tuesday, according to a news release from the district attorney’s office.

The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. on Jan. 9 outside of a house near East 62nd Drive and North Gibraltar Court — a neighborhood west of Himalaya Street and south of East 64th Avenue in Aurora.

The victim walked outside of his house and saw a red sedan. An unknown person started shooting at him from the vehicle, according to the Aurora Police Department. Investigators do not believe the attack was random.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The Adams County Coroner’s Office will release the victim’s identification following investigations.

Police found the 15-year-old boy driving the red sedan on Jan. 11 and he was arrested due to an outstanding warrant. Following an interview, police arrested the teen on suspicion of first-degree murder.

The case was filed in Adams County Juvenile Court on Tuesday. The district attorney’s office did not say whether the case will be transferred to district court and the boy will be tried as an adult.
