Colorado Buffaloes finding plenty of SEC talent in transfer portal

There aren’t the big names like Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter this time around, but Colorado and Deion Sanders are still dominating the transfer portal.

With 15 players already committed since the portal opened earlier this month, the Buffaloes have filled many of the holes coach Sanders pointed out countless times in the final weeks of the 2023 season. All but two of the newcomers are from Power 5 schools.

The quality-over-quantity approach seems to be working as CU currently has the second-ranked transfer portal class, behind Ole Miss, which is putting together a historic group of transfers.

The Buffs picked up a commitment from former Houston nose tackle Chidozie Nwankwo on Monday afternoon, while losing a commitment from former Indiana offensive lineman Matthew Bedford, who flipped to Oregon.

Here are some of the highlights from the latest commitments:

More weapons for Shedeur Sanders

One of the least-talked about players the Buffs must replace is top wide receiver Xavier Weaver, who led the team with 68 catches and 908 receiving yards in his lone season in Boulder.

CU still has starters Travis Hunter and Jimmy Horn Jr., who combined for 115 catches, 1,288 yards and 11 touchdowns in 2023, as well as promising young players like Omarion Miller and Tar’varish Dawson, each of whom had a big game early in the season. More pass-catching talent was needed and the Buffs are hopeful they found that in a trio of players.

The headliner is all-SEC wideout Will Sheppard, who racked up 152 catches for 2,067 yards and 21 touchdowns across four seasons at Vanderbilt. He should be a starter at CU.

The other two receivers are Terrell Timmons Jr., a cousin of NFL star Keenan Allen, who had 14 catches for 274 yards and a touchdown in two years at N.C. State, and former four-star high school recruit Cordale Russell, who didn’t see any action last season at TCU.

The room with the clearest lack of depth in Boulder was the quarterback room. While Shedeur Sanders played like one of the nation’s top signal callers in 2023, the concern was an injury. Sure enough, Sanders suffered one in the penultimate game of the season.

True freshman Ryan Staub’s performance in the season finale against Utah quieted some of those concerns, but depth was still needed and CU found that in a pair of SEC quarterbacks who are sophomores in terms of eligibility.

Vanderbilt transfer Walter Taylor appeared in five games, completing five of 15 passes for 44 yards. He also ran the ball 30 times for 103 yards and a touchdown as the 6-foot-7, 235-pound player is a major threat with his legs.

The other quarterback to commit to CU is Destin Wade, a former four-star recruit who made one start across two years at Kentucky. He committed with his twin brother, Keaten, a talented edge rusher who was also at Kentucky.

A brand-new offensive line

It’s a good time to be Shedeur Sanders.

After being the most-sacked QB in the nation in 2023, Sanders has a revamped offensive line in front of him, featuring four experienced players — each with multiple years of starting experience.

Interior linemen Tyler Johnson from Houston and Justin Mayers from UTEP are the highest-rated of the bunch, but Indiana transfer Kahlil Benson should compete for a starting spot as well.

The Buffs right now have just one regular starting lineman returning in right tackle Savion Washington.

CU also beefed up the other side of the line with a pair of SEC defensive linemen — LSU’s Quency Wiggins and Alabama’s Anquin Bolden, both of whom were four-star high school recruits.
