Denver website outage a vendor ‘bug,’ not a cyberattack
Denver technology officials said a network outage that took down most of the city’s website late last month was due to a “bug” and not hackers.
“The outage last week was not an attempted cyberattack,” Jenny Schiavone, Denver Technology Services Chief Digital Officer, told The Denver Gazette. “We experienced an issue within one of our server environments due to a bug on the vendor’s side, and it’s since been remediated.”
Shortly before 11 a.m. on May 27, the city’s website, as well as several of its online services, went down after experiencing a “citywide network outage,” according to city officials at the time.
This outage affected multiple applications and technology systems, including some limited interruptions to public services.
Denver Technology Services spokesperson Amanda Weston said the outage affected several services, including the Denver Police Department’s non-emergency line, as well as the ability to process some payments in-person.
911 emergency services were not affected.
Parts of the city’s website came back online around 5:14 p.m. but with a message that some online systems were still experiencing “issues.”
Some city employees reported connectivity issues, including the ability to access applications and technology systems.
