Midterm results: Democrat Kim Schrier wins reelection in Washington’s 8th District

Rep. Kim Schrier (D-WA) will continue to represent Washington’s 8th Congressional District after fending off Republican challenger Matt Larkin in Tuesday’s midterm election.

Schrier was first elected to the 8th District in 2018 and was the first Democrat to be elected to the district since its establishment in 1983.

Schrier had been the expected victor of the race leading up to election night, as she won 79 out of 100 simulated races against her opponent. Larkin, on the other hand, only won 21 of the simulated races, FiveThirtyEight estimated on Oct. 31.

Larkin had made crime in the United States a focus of his campaign and accused his opponent, who has painted herself as a centrist trying to work with both parties, of failing to speak up against the “defund the police” movement, according to the Seattle Times.

“We needed leadership more than ever and she didn’t step up,” Larkin said. “And now she’s trying to make up for lost time, and I think it’s too little, too late.”

Abortion was one of the biggest issues ahead of the 2022 midterm elections after the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade earlier this year. Schrier, a pediatrician, has voiced her support for abortion, calling herself the “only pro-choice woman doctor in Congress” who will “always stand up to protect a woman’s right to choose.”

Larkin stated he would support a national abortion ban but would be willing to make exceptions if the abortion saved the woman’s life. The Republican candidate said at a Republican event that he did not believe in making exceptions for abortion in situations such as “rape and incest and things like that,” according to the Seattle Times.
