Witness in Pueblo murder trial shot, killed in Denver

A woman scheduled to be a witness in a Pueblo murder trial was shot and killed in Denver last week, the Denver Police Department said.

Roxann Martinez, 31, was found dead on Feb. 25 at 11 p.m. at East Kenyon Drive and South Wabash Street in the Hampden South neighborhood.

The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner identified Martinez and ruled the death a homicide on Tuesday.

Pueblo County District Attorney Jeff Chostner said Martinez was an endorsed witness for the prosecution of Donthe Lucas, who is accused of killing his ex-girlfriend Kelsie Schelling in 2013.

Denver DA moves to charge 14-year-old as adult in Pamela Cabriales' death

Schelling, who was 21 years old and eight weeks pregnant at the time, went missing in February 2013.

Her ex-boyfriend Lucas was charged with Schelling’s death in December 2017, though her body was never found.

Chostner said Martinez had not yet testified during the trial, which began three weeks ago and is still ongoing.

Denver police said it is aware of Martinez’s connection to the trial but it does not believe her death is connected to her status as a witness.

Officials have refused to say why they don’t think it is connected.

Police are asking for the public’s help in developing leads in Martinez’s death. No arrests have been made and no suspect information is available.

Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Denver Crime Stoppers at 720-913-7867. Tipsters can be anonymous and are eligible for a $2,000 reward.
