Russia claims it’s using drone killing, satellite blinding laser weapons in Ukraine

Russia claims it has deployed powerful new laser weapons in Ukraine capable of blinding satellites and destroying targets miles away.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov told a Russian television station on Wednesday that there are two types of new laser weapons being used on the battlefields of Ukraine. One weapon, the Peresvet system, is capable of blinding reconnaissance satellites from a distance of 900 miles, according to Borisov. The other weapon, the Zadira system, is newer and more advanced, according to the deputy prime minister, and can destroy targets, such as drones, from a distance of 3 miles.

“If Peresvet blinds, then the new generation of laser weapons lead to the physical destruction of the target — thermal destruction, they burn up,” Borisov told Russian state television.

“The first prototypes are already being used [in Ukraine],” he continued.

The Peresvet anti-satellite laser was unveiled by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2018. He claimed the laser can’t be defended against by adversaries. An image of the weapon system was made public during the unveiling. The laser is reportedly named after a 14th-century Russian Orthodox warrior monk, Alexander Peresvet.

Less is known about the Zadira laser.

The Zadira is capable of “easily shooting down various types of drones,” according to Borisov, who claimed the weapon was tested against a drone on Tuesday and the laser incinerated it within five seconds.

Borisov said the Zadira laser will allow Russia to conserve “costly missiles of the Pantsyr and Tor types.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mocked Russia’s claims of using lasers in Ukraine, saying in his Wednesday night address that Borisov’s comments are a propaganda effort that indicates Russia is losing the war.

“Well, in the propaganda of Nazi Germany there was such a term ‘wunderwaffe.’ Wonder weapon. The clearer it became they had no chance in the war, the more propaganda there was about the wonder weapon, which would be so powerful that it would provide a turning point in the war,” Zelensky said.

“And here we see that in the third month of a full-scale war, Russia is trying to find its ‘wunderwaffe.’ Allegedly laser. All this clearly indicates the complete failure of the invasion.”

The Ukrainian president also said it is “noteworthy” that Russia revealed that it needs to conserve its missile stockpile.
