Nearly 100 people were left dead and more than seven dozen injured following a fuel tank explosion Friday in Sierra Leone.

The explosion in the African nation’s capital of Freetown resulted from a collision between the fuel tanker and a truck, according to Reuters. Ninety-nine people were reported dead, with more than 100 left injured from the explosion, the outlet reported.

“We’ve got so many casualties, burnt corpses,” Brima Bureh Sesay, the head of the National Disaster Agency, said in a video. “It’s a terrible, terrible accident.”

Among the victims were people who moved toward the tanker, attempting to retrieve fuel leaking from the “ruptured vehicle,” the report added.

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio expressed his “sympathies” for the families who had lost their loved ones after the crash.

“My Government will do everything to support affected families,” he said on Twitter.

Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr also said she was “deeply saddened to hear” about the explosion, according to a Facebook statement.

Aki-Sawyerr described the “video and photo footage” from the incident, which was going around social media, as “harrowing” and said Freetown City Council’s Disaster Response Team would meet with the National Disaster Management Agency Saturday morning to conduct a needs assessment.

As of Saturday, emergency crews were attempting to clear the site. Found among the debris from the incident were “blackened shells of cars and motorbikes,” along with “a burnt human body.”

Many of the injured were initially taken to Connaught Hospital. Upon receiving an “influx of patients,” several were moved to other hospitals, including a military hospital, the report said.

Swaray Lengor, a program manager with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said the death toll would “likely rise.”
