CU Buffs add former NFL QB Byron Leftwich to coaching staff
Deion Sanders keeps adding more and more NFL experience to his coaching staff.
According to a report by Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz, former NFL quarterback Bryon Leftwich is set to join the CU Buffs’ coaching staff. Sanders introduced Leftwich to the team on Wednesday.
His role with the team is not known.
Leftwich spent nine seasons in the NFL as a player before getting into coaching. He started as a quarterbacks coach with the Arizona Cardinals before moving on to be the offensive coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2019.
He worked with legendary quarterback Tom Brady and was part of the coaching staff when Tampa Bay won Super Bowl LV. He was a candidate for several NFL coaching jobs during the 2021 coaching cycle. He was let go in 2022.
The former Jaguars QB will join a staff that already features former NFL players Sanders, Marshall Faulk (running backs), Warren Sapp (defense senior quality control analyst), Domata Peko (defensive line) and Andre Gurode (offensive line). Sanders, Faulk and Sapp are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Pat Shurmur holds the title of offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach so it is unclear what Leftwich’s role will be. The Buffs will have a new quarterback this year as Shedeur Sanders heads to the NFL. Four-star recruit Julian Lewis, Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter and last season’s backup Ryan Staub will all compete for the job.
